Scientific classification
Genus:
Oxymycterus
Species:
akodontius

The Argentine hocicudo (scientific name: Oxymycterus akodontius) is a small rodent that belongs to the Cricetidae family. This family includes many types of mice and hamsters. This special animal is found only in the northern parts of Argentina.

About the Argentine Hocicudo

The Argentine hocicudo is a type of mouse with a long snout, which is why it's called a "hocicudo." This name comes from a Spanish word meaning "long-snouted." It's a unique creature that lives in specific parts of South America.

Where Does It Live?

This rodent lives in a special kind of forest called the yungas. These forests are found on the eastern side of the Andes mountains. The yungas are known for their rich plant life and many different animal species. It's a humid, subtropical mountain forest.

How Many Are There?

Scientists don't know exactly how many Argentine hocicudos exist. So far, only three of these animals have ever been found and studied. This makes them quite rare and hard to learn about.

What Threats Does It Face?

The Argentine hocicudo might be in danger because of things like deforestation. This is when forests are cut down, which destroys the animal's home. Another possible threat is overgrazing, which happens when too many animals eat the plants in an area, leaving less food and shelter for native wildlife. Scientists are still studying how much these activities affect the hocicudo's population.

Is It a Unique Species?

Some scientists believe the Argentine hocicudo is its own distinct species. However, other scientists think it might be the same as another type of hocicudo called Oxymycterus paramensis. They are still working to figure out if they are truly different or just variations of the same animal.
