Argus is a small place in the Mojave Desert in California. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's called an unincorporated community.
Argus is located in the northwestern part of San Bernardino County. It sits within an area known as the Searles Valley. This community is about 17 miles (27 km) east-northeast of a larger town called Ridgecrest.
Argus Power Plant
For many years, Argus was home to a special power plant. This plant used coal to create electricity. It was known as a "circulating fluidized bed" plant.
This power plant could produce 96 megawatts of power. That's enough electricity for many homes and businesses.
Why the Plant Closed
The Argus power plant eventually shut down. This happened because California made new rules about pollution. These rules, called "emissions regulations," aimed to make the air cleaner.
Because of these new rules, the plant could no longer operate. It was the last coal-fired power plant of its kind in California.
Part of Searles Valley
Argus is one of several communities that make up a larger area. This area is called the Searles Valley census-designated place.
A "census-designated place" is a special area defined by the government. It helps them count people and gather information for the census. It's not an official town, but it helps keep track of populations.
Besides Argus, this area also includes the communities of Pioneer Point and Trona. The main community of Searles Valley is also part of this group.
