Early Life and Education
Aristides Gomes was born in 1954 in a place called Canchungo, which is in the Cacheu Region of Guinea-Bissau. He went to college at the University of Paris VIII in France. There, he studied sociology, which is about how societies work, and political science, which is about how governments work.
Career in Government
Before becoming Prime Minister, Gomes worked in different roles. From 1990 to 1992, he was a director at the national TV station, Televisão Experimental da Guiné-Bissau. He also served as a minister in charge of planning and international cooperation under President João Bernardo Vieira.
Joining Political Parties
Gomes was a member of a major political party called the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) for a long time. He joined this party in 1973. He became an important member, being elected to the party's Political Bureau in 1998. Later, in 2002, he was chosen as the First Vice-President of the PAIGC.
Becoming Prime Minister
In the parliamentary election in March 2004, Gomes was elected to the country's main law-making body, the National People's Assembly of Guinea-Bissau. He tried to become the President of the Assembly but was not chosen.
Later, in May 2004, he was offered a job as a minister in the government led by Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Júnior. However, Aristides Gomes did not accept this job. He felt that the military still had too much influence over the government.
In 2005, he supported João Bernardo Vieira in the presidential election. Because he supported Vieira instead of his own party's candidate, he was suspended from the PAIGC. After Vieira won the election, he chose Aristides Gomes to be the Prime Minister in November 2005. The PAIGC party disagreed with this choice, but the country's highest court said that President Vieira had the right to choose anyone he wanted as Prime Minister.
Leaving Office
In March 2007, three political parties, including the PAIGC, decided to form a new government together. They wanted President Vieira to remove Gomes from his position. Even though some people supported Gomes, the parliament voted to remove his government.
On March 29, Gomes announced that he had resigned from his position. He said he was waiting for President Vieira's final decision. On April 9, Vieira appointed Martinho Ndafa Kabi as the new Prime Minister, and Kabi took office on April 13, 2007.
Forming a New Party
After leaving office, Aristides Gomes started his own political party called the Republican Party of Independence and Development (PRID). This party officially began in March 2008. Gomes became the leader of PRID. His new party supported President Vieira and took part in the parliamentary election in November 2008. PRID won three seats in the parliament, and Gomes himself won a seat representing his home area.
Later Political Life
After President Vieira passed away in March 2009, Gomes left Guinea-Bissau for a while. He tried to run for president in the June 2009 presidential election as the PRID candidate. However, the Supreme Court said he could not run because he had been out of the country for too long before he applied.
Aristides Gomes continued to be an important figure in Guinea-Bissau's politics, serving as Prime Minister two more times in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020.
