Ariyalur District is a special area, or 'district,' in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Its main town, where the district's offices are, is called Ariyalur. This district covers about 1,949 square kilometers (that's about 752 square miles) and, in 2011, had a population of around 752,481 people.

Ariyalur is famous for its cement factories and has a lot of lignite, which is a type of coal. The amazing Gangaikonda Cholapuram is also in this district. This temple was built by King Rajendra Chola from the Chola Empire. It is so important that UNESCO has named it a World Heritage site.

This district is also well-known for its many old fossils from prehistoric times. Scientists have found fossils of huge mollusks (like snails or clams) and jawed fish here. What's really cool is that the Rajasaurus, a type of dinosaur from India, was identified from fossils found in this area!

People and Population

The number of people living in Ariyalur District is quite interesting.

How Many People Live Here?

According to a count done in 2011, about 752,481 people live in Ariyalur District. This number is roughly the same as the entire country of Guyana or the US state of Alaska.

Where Does It Rank?

Out of all 640 districts in India, Ariyalur ranks 491st in terms of population. This means it's not one of the most crowded places. In Tamil Nadu, it's actually the third least populated district out of 32. Only Perambalur and Nilgiris have fewer people.

How Fast is it Growing?

Between 2001 and 2011, the number of people living in Ariyalur District grew by about 8.19%. This shows a steady increase in its population over that time.

How Crowded is it?

The district has about 387 people living in every square kilometer. This tells us how many people live in a certain area, giving us an idea of how crowded it is.

Historical Discoveries

Ariyalur District has a rich history, and some important discoveries have been made here.

Ancient Temple Idols

In 2008, officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) found that some ancient statues were missing from a 9th-century Chola temple. This temple is the Brahadeeswarar Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram.

Where Did They Go?

One of these missing statues, called the Sripuranthan Natarajan Idol, was later found far away in the National Gallery of Australia. This shows how important these ancient artworks are.

Idols Returned Home

Good news! Two of the statues that were found missing were eventually brought back. Today, you can see them displayed in the Government Museum in Kumbakonam. This helps preserve the history and culture of the region.
