The Arizona sycamore (scientific name: Platanus wrightii) is a large tree found in the southwestern United States and parts of Mexico. It's a type of sycamore tree that loses its leaves every year. These trees can grow very tall, sometimes reaching up to 82 feet (25 meters)!
Where the Arizona Sycamore Grows
This tree is native to Arizona and New Mexico. You can also find it further south in the Mexican states of Sonora, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa.
Favorite Places to Grow
The Arizona sycamore loves to grow near water. You'll often see it in areas along rivers and streams. These places are called riparian areas. It's very common in the "sky islands" of southeastern Arizona. These "sky islands" are like tall, green mountains that rise up from drier desert areas. They have a different climate and more water, which is perfect for the sycamore.
The tree is also found in parts of the Sonoran Desert, especially where there's enough water. Its range stretches into the western foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in Mexico.
