Nature and Landscape
The river Arlanza is very important to this region. It starts in the pine forests of Quintanar de la Sierra. The river flows from east to west because the land slopes downwards. The area gets a good amount of rain, which helps the plants grow.
Most of the land here is used for growing cereals. This is because, a long time ago, many large forests of pines, oaks, and other trees were cleared. You can still see hints of these old forests in the names of some towns, like Pineda Trasmonte and Nebreda. In the past, people in this area used to make a lot of charcoal from wood.
How to Get Around
Getting around the Arlanza region is quite easy. There are good roads that connect different parts. The national N-I highway, which goes from Madrid to Irun, crosses the region from north to south. The N-622 highway goes from Lerma to Palencia, connecting the west and east.
There are also several local roads that help people travel between the towns and villages:
- BU-101 from Villahoz to Villaquirán de los Infantes
- BU-114 from Quintanilla de la Mata to Villafruela
- BU-900 from Lerma to Silos
- BU-901 from Cuevas de San Clemente to Silos
- BU-904 from Lerma to Covarrubias
- BU-905 from Covarrubias to Hortigüela
- BU-910 from Hacinas to Caleruega
A Look Back in Time: History of Arlanza
The Arlanza area was settled by different groups of people around the mid-800s. These groups included the Astur, Cantabri, Visigothic, and Mozarab peoples. This happened after the border of the County of Castile reached the Duero river.
