Arley is found in a beautiful spot, partly inside the William B. Bankhead National Forest. The town covers about 3.76 square miles (9.74 square kilometers) of land. It is close to Lewis Smith Lake and the nearby town of Addison. Arley's landscape is mostly forests and rolling hills, giving it a very rural feel.

Arley officially became a town in 1965. The first time it appeared in the U.S. Census as a town was in 1970. Before it was a town, the area was known as the Arley precinct. This precinct existed from 1920 until 1960.
