Armand Camille Salacrou (born August 9, 1899 – died November 23, 1989) was a famous French dramatist. This means he wrote plays for the theater.

About Armand Salacrou

Armand Salacrou was born in Rouen, France. He spent most of his childhood in Le Havre. Later, in 1917, he moved to Paris. His early plays were inspired by a style called Surrealism. This style often used dream-like and imaginative ideas.

He used to own a successful advertising company. But he sold it so he could spend all his time writing plays. A theater director named Charles Dullin encouraged him. Salacrou wrote plays in many different styles. He became very successful starting in the mid-1930s.

His later plays are often linked to a way of thinking called Existentialism. This idea explores what it means to be human and find meaning in life. During the 1920s, he was interested in communism. He also wrote a play called Boulevard Durand that talked about problems with capitalism.

When the Nazis occupied France during World War II, Salacrou secretly joined the French resistance. This group worked against the occupation. He wrote about his experiences in a play called Les Nuits de la colère.

Armand Salacrou was a member of the Académie Goncourt. This is a famous French group that gives out important literary awards. A library in his hometown is named after him to honor his work.
