In the 1980s, he helped with a program called "Operation Production." This program moved people who didn't have jobs in cities to farming areas in the northern part of the country.
Later, in 1986, the country's leader, Samora Machel, died. Armando Guebuza was part of a group of 10 leaders who briefly led the country together. He also helped with peace talks. These talks were with another group called RENAMO. The talks led to a peace agreement signed in Rome in 1992. This agreement helped bring peace to Mozambique.
After the country changed its economic policies, Guebuza became a successful businessman. He worked in areas like construction, exports, and fishing. In 2002, he was chosen to be FRELIMO's candidate for president. He also became the Secretary General of the party that year.
