Army of Mississippi facts for kids
The Army of Mississippi was an important group of soldiers who fought for the Confederate States during the American Civil War. This army should not be mixed up with a different army called the Union Army of the Mississippi, which fought for the United States.
The Confederate Army of Mississippi was first formed on March 29, 1862. Its first main leader was General Albert Sidney Johnston. General P. G. T. Beauregard was his second-in-command.

General Albert Sidney Johnston
General Johnston was the first commander of the Army of Mississippi. He led the army during the early part of the war.
Battle of Shiloh
A very important battle for this army was the Battle of Shiloh. During this battle, General Johnston was killed. After his death, General Beauregard took over as the main commander.
Changes in Command
After General Beauregard, several other generals led the Army of Mississippi. This army went through many changes in its leadership.
Renaming the Army
Becoming the Army of Tennessee
In November 1862, the Army of Mississippi was given a new name. It became known as the Army of Tennessee. This new name stayed with the army for a long time.
A Second Army of Mississippi
New Formation in December 1862
Even though the first army was renamed, a second army was created in December 1862. This new army was also called the Army of Mississippi. Its leader was Lieutenant general John C. Pemberton.
Confusing Names for Parts of the Army
This second Army of Mississippi had many different names for its parts. For example, one large section of the army, called the II corps, was led by Major general Sterling Price. This part was sometimes called the "Army of West Tennessee" or the "Army of the West".
Changes to Divisions
In January 1863, the large parts of the army, called corps, were changed into smaller groups called divisions. After this change, the army stopped using the name Army of Mississippi. Another general named Leonidas Polk had led the I corps before this change.
The Third Army of Mississippi
Joining Forces in 1864
In May 1864, a third group of soldiers was called the Army of Mississippi. This happened when General Polk's troops joined with General Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee.
General Polk's Death
General Polk was killed in June 1864. After his death, the group of soldiers he had led was simply called Alexander P. Stewart's corps.
