Arnbitter is a special type of strong, flavored drink called a bitters. It comes from Denmark and is known for its secret recipe, which includes spices like ginger, cloves, and saffron. It's made by a company called Just Drinks and has been around since the 1950s. People in Denmark know it by its slogan, "Neither new, trendy, nor imported," which means it's a classic Danish drink.
The Story of Arnbitter
Arnbitter was first created by a man named Arne M. Hansen. He ran a wine storage business in a part of Aarhus, Denmark. We don't know the exact year it was invented, but it was first talked about in the 1950s. Arne Hansen worked with a drink expert named Harald P. Sørensen to create the final recipe.
In 1978, a company called Anthon Thorup & Søn, which had been around since 1893, bought the secret recipe. They made and sold Arnbitter until 2015. When that company closed, the recipe was sold to Just Drinks, a company based in Copenhagen. They moved the production of Arnbitter from Aarhus to Copenhagen.
Different Kinds of Arnbitter
There are two main types of Arnbitter. The most common one is 50% alcohol. It's made with many different herbs mixed with alcohol. You can find this type in special stores, some wine shops, and at border markets between Denmark and Germany in Flensburg. It's also sold at Danish airports and on the Faroe Islands.
The other type is called Arnbitter Mint, and it's harder to find. It was first made in 1997. This version has a menthol (minty) flavor and is 40% alcohol, which is a bit less strong than the original. Arnbitter Mint is also amber brown, but it's a darker shade than the regular Arnbitter.
