Arnold Chan (born June 10, 1967 – died September 14, 2017) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area called Scarborough—Agincourt in 2014. He served in the House of Commons of Canada until his death in 2017.

Arnold Chan's Early Life and Schooling
Arnold Chan went to several schools in his early life. These included Henry Kelsey Senior Public School and Sir Ernest MacMillan Senior Public School. He also attended Dr Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute. After high school, he went to the University of Toronto. There, he earned a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees. His studies focused on political science and urban planning. Later, he earned a law degree from the University of British Columbia.
Arnold Chan's Career Before Politics
Before becoming a politician, Arnold Chan worked as a lawyer. He also worked for the government of Ontario. He was a chief of staff for a cabinet minister named Michael Chan. A chief of staff helps a minister with their daily work. Later, Arnold Chan became a senior aide to Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. An aide is a helper or assistant.
Arnold Chan's Time in Federal Politics
Arnold Chan decided to run for a seat in the Canadian Parliament. He won the chance to represent the Liberal Party in Scarborough—Agincourt. This happened after the previous MP, Jim Karygiannis, left his position. In 2014, Arnold Chan was elected to Parliament in a special election called a by-election. He won with a large number of votes.
When his party was not in power, Arnold Chan had important roles. He was a "critic" for certain areas. This means he watched over and commented on government actions. He was a critic for economic development in Northern and Southern Ontario. In November 2014, he became the critic for Tourism and Small Business.
In January 2015, Arnold Chan shared some personal news. He announced he would take time off for medical treatment. He was dealing with nasopharyngeal cancer. When he returned, he continued his work. He spoke out against the government's use of public advertising. He also wanted Canada to promote itself more to tourists around the world.
After the Liberal Party won the federal election in October 2015, Arnold Chan received a new role. He became the Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. This is an important leadership position. He was also known for supporting the Armenian Canadian community. He led a group that promoted friendship between Canada and Armenia. In 2017, he welcomed Garo Paylan, an Armenian Member of the Turkish Parliament, to Canada.
Arnold Chan gave his last speech in Parliament on June 12, 2017. He asked other Members of Parliament to work together. He urged them to improve how they debated in Parliament. He said, "I would ask all of us to elevate our debate, to elevate our practice." He wanted them to treat the Parliament with respect.
Arnold Chan's Personal Life
Arnold Chan was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in 2014. After getting better in 2015, the cancer returned in 2016. He passed away on September 14, 2017, at the age of 50.
Arnold Chan was married to Jean Yip. They had three sons together. After his death, his wife Jean Yip ran for his old seat in Parliament. She won the by-election on December 11, 2017.
Arnold Chan also had a younger brother, Kevin Chan, who is a doctor.
