Arolde de Oliveira (born March 11, 1937 – died October 21, 2020) was an important Brazilian politician. He was also a soldier and an economist. Even though he was born in Rio Grande do Sul, he spent most of his political life representing the state of Rio de Janeiro. He served as a federal deputy for many years and later became a federal senator. He passed away in October 2020 due to complications from COVID-19.

Early Life and Education

Arolde de Oliveira was born in São Luiz Gonzaga. His parents were Horácio de Oliveira and Margarida Barbosa Gonçalves. He was the oldest of six children in a humble family.

To continue his studies, Arolde moved to Porto Alegre for high school. After that, he attended military school in the same city. Later, he moved to Resende in Rio de Janeiro state. There, he went to the Agulhas Negras Military Academy, which is a famous military school.

Career as a Politician

After his military training, Arolde de Oliveira became a captain in the army. He decided to stay in Rio de Janeiro. For a short time, he worked as an economist and an engineer. Soon after, he started his career in politics.

In 1983, Arolde got a temporary position in the Chamber of Deputies. This is like being a representative for a state in the national government. In 1986, he was officially elected to this role. He was re-elected eight more times, serving for many years.

He was part of the National Constitutional Assembly from 1987 to 1988. This group helped write Brazil's new constitution. Arolde was the leader of a special group focused on science, technology, and communication.

From 2002 to 2008, he worked as the Secretary for Transportation in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This meant he was in charge of how people moved around the city.

During his time in Congress, Arolde de Oliveira was known for his strong beliefs. He was part of a group of politicians who shared similar religious views. He voted to remove then-president Dilma Rousseff from office. He also supported a new law about workers' rights in 2017.

In the 2018 elections, Arolde de Oliveira ran for a seat in the Senate. This is another important part of Brazil's national government. He received support from Jair Bolsonaro, who later became president. Arolde was elected to the Senate with over 2.3 million votes. He officially started his term on February 1, 2019.

Arolde de Oliveira was one of several new politicians elected in 2018 who had strong religious backgrounds. He had firm opinions on various social topics.

Personal Life

Arolde de Oliveira met his wife, Yvelise, while he was stationed in Resende for military school. They had two children together.

He was a very religious person and a devout Baptist. His faith was important to him, and he often spoke about issues related to his beliefs while in office.

Arolde de Oliveira passed away on October 21, 2020. He died from health problems caused by COVID-19 at a hospital in Rio de Janeiro.
