Arpad Sterbik Capar (born November 20, 1979) is a famous retired handball player. He was a fantastic goalkeeper. He played for the national teams of Yugoslavia (later Serbia and Montenegro) and Spain.

Arpad won many awards during his career. He earned bronze and gold medals at the World Championship. He also won league and cup titles in Hungary and Spain. One of his biggest achievements was winning the EHF Champions League. This is the top club competition in Europe. He was even named IHF World Player of the Year in 2005.

Arpad Sterbik's Handball Journey

Arpad grew up in a town called Ada in Serbia. He started his handball career at RK Jugović. In 2001, he moved to Hungary to play for Fotex KC Veszprém.

Playing in Hungary

While in Hungary, Arpad won three Hungarian league titles. He also won three Hungarian cup titles. In 2002, his team Veszprém reached the EHF Champions League final. They played against SC Magdeburg but lost by a small score. In the same year, he was named the Hungarian Handballer of the Year.

Moving to Spain

In 2004, Arpad moved to Spain to play for BM Ciudad Real. He quickly became one of the best goalkeepers in the Liga ASOBAL. He was named the best goalkeeper in the league five times in a row. This was from 2006 to 2010. In 2006, he also won the Liga ASOBAL MVP Award.

In 2005, the International Handball Federation gave him the IHF World Player of the Year award. Arpad played for Ciudad Real for seven seasons. During this time, he won four Spanish league titles. He also won two Spanish cup titles. He was very successful in the EHF Champions League too. He won this important title three times with Ciudad Real. In 2008, Arpad became a Spanish citizen. He then decided to play for Spain's national team.

Later Club Career

After eight successful years in Spain, Arpad joined FC Barcelona Handbol in 2012. He signed a four-year contract with them.

On June 14, 2014, Arpad moved to RK Vardar in Macedonia. With RK Vardar, he won two Macedonian Handball League titles. He also won two Cup titles. In the 2014–2015 season, his team reached the quarter-finals of the EHF Champions League. This meant they were among the top 8 teams in Europe. He also won the SEHA League multiple times with Vardar.

International Success

Arpad played for two national teams during his career. First, he played for Yugoslavia. With them, he won bronze medals at the 1999 and 2001 World Championships.

Later, he played for Spain. With Spain, he added another World Championship bronze medal in 2011. He then won a gold medal in 2013. He also won a gold medal at the 2018 European Championship with Spain.

Arpad's Family Life

Arpad was born in Senta, Serbia. He is of Hungarian background. He is married to Mónika Horváth, who is an economist. They have twin children, Laura and Noel, who were born in 2010. Arpad's sister, Andrea Sterbik, is also a professional handball player.
