Arpad Sterbik Capar (born November 20, 1979) is a famous retired handball player. He was a fantastic goalkeeper known for his amazing saves. Arpad played for the national teams of Yugoslavia (later Serbia and Montenegro) and Spain.
He won many important titles during his career. These include a gold medal at the World Championship with Spain and several EHF Champions League titles with his clubs. He was even named the IHF World Player of the Year in 2005, which is a huge honor in handball!

Arpad Sterbik's Handball Journey
Arpad Sterbik started his handball career in his home country, playing for RK Jugović. He then moved to Hungary in 2001 to join Fotex KC Veszprém.
Playing in Hungary
While playing for Veszprém, Arpad won three Hungarian league titles and three Hungarian cup titles. In 2002, his team reached the final of the EHF Champions League, which is the biggest club competition in Europe. Even though they didn't win that final, Arpad's skills were noticed. He was named the Hungarian Handballer of the Year in 2002.
Success in Spain
In 2004, Arpad moved to Spain to play for BM Ciudad Real. He quickly became one of the best goalkeepers in the Spanish league. He was named the best goalkeeper in the league five times in a row from 2006 to 2010! In 2006, he also won the Liga ASOBAL MVP Award, meaning he was the most valuable player in the league.
In 2005, Arpad received the highest individual award in handball: the IHF World Player of the Year title. With Ciudad Real, he won four Spanish league titles and two Spanish cup titles. He also helped Ciudad Real win the EHF Champions League three times, showing he was a true champion! In 2008, Arpad became a Spanish citizen and decided to play for the Spanish national team.
After many successful years with Ciudad Real and Atlético Madrid, Arpad joined FC Barcelona Handbol in 2012.
Time with RK Vardar
On June 14, 2014, Arpad moved to RK Vardar in Macedonia. With Vardar, he continued to win titles, including two Macedonian Handball League titles and two Cup titles in his first two years. His team also reached the quarter-finals of the EHF Champions League in the 2014–2015 season. Arpad also received individual awards with Vardar, being chosen for the SEHA League dream-team in 2015–16.
Playing for His Country
Arpad Sterbik played for two national teams during his career. First, he played for Yugoslavia (later Serbia and Montenegro). With them, he won bronze medals at the 1999 and 2001 World Championships.
Later, after becoming a Spanish citizen, he played for Spain. He added another World Championship bronze medal in 2011 and a gold medal in 2013 with Spain. He also won a gold medal at the 2018 European Championship and a silver medal in 2016 with Spain.
Arpad Sterbik's Personal Life
Arpad Sterbik was born in Senta, Serbia, which was part of Yugoslavia at the time. He is of Hungarian background from Serbia. He has Hungarian citizenship and also Spanish citizenship.
Arpad is married to Mónika Horváth, who is an economist. They have twin children, a daughter named Laura and a son named Noel, who were born in 2010. Arpad's sister, Andrea Sterbik, is also a professional handball player.
