History of Avesnes-sur-Helpe
The Nord department was created way back in 1790. At that time, the Avesnes-sur-Helpe area was known simply as Avesnes. It was one of the first districts in the new department.
Later, in 1962, the name of the main town changed. It became Avesnes-sur-Helpe. The name of the whole district changed too, to match the town.
Geography of Avesnes-sur-Helpe
The Arrondissement of Avesnes-sur-Helpe is located in the southeast part of the Nord department. It shares borders with Belgium to the north and east. To the south, it borders the Aisne department.
To the northwest, you'll find the Valenciennes arrondissement. The Cambrai arrondissement is to the west.
This district is the second largest in the Nord department. It covers an area of about 1,407.5 square kilometers (543.4 square miles). In 2014, about 231,727 people lived here. This means there were about 165 people living in each square kilometer.
