History of Muret Arrondissement
The Muret area has an interesting history. When the Haute-Garonne department was first created in 1790, Muret was already an important district.
In 1800, when arrondissements were first set up in France, Muret became one of them. However, it was removed in 1803. Luckily, it became an arrondissement again in 1806.
Later, in 1926, the Muret arrondissement was removed once more. But don't worry, it was brought back for good in 1942!

The Muret arrondissement is the smallest in its department. It covers an area of about 1,639 square kilometers (or 633 square miles).
Even though it's the smallest in size, it's the second most populated. About 215,606 people lived there in 2014. This means it has a population density of about 131.5 people per square kilometer.
The arrondissement is surrounded by other areas:
- To the northeast, it borders the Toulouse arrondissement.
- To the south, it's next to the Ariège department.
- To the southwest, it borders the Saint-Gaudens arrondissement.
- To the northwest, it's next to the Gers department.
