History

The Saint-Gaudens area has a long history. When the Haute-Garonne department was first created in 1790, Saint-Gaudens was already an important district. Later, in 1800, when France created arrondissements, Saint-Gaudens became one of the original ones in the department.

Geography

The Saint-Gaudens arrondissement is the southernmost part of the Haute-Garonne department. It covers an area of about 2,140 square kilometers (826 square miles). Much of this area is located in the Pyrenees mountain range.

It's also the least populated arrondissement in Haute-Garonne. In 2014, about 77,545 people lived here. This means there were about 36 people living in each square kilometer.

The arrondissement shares its borders with several other places:

  • To the north, it borders the Gers department.
  • To the northeast, it borders the Muret arrondissement.
  • To the east, it borders the Ariège department.
  • To the south, it borders Spain.
  • To the west, it borders the Hautes-Pyrénées department.
