Arrondissements of the Charente department facts for kids
Arrondissements are like smaller districts or areas within a larger region in France, called a department. Think of them as smaller parts that make up a bigger puzzle piece. The Charente department has three of these special areas.
The main town or city of an arrondissement is called a subprefecture. If the main city of the whole department (called a prefecture) is inside an arrondissement, then that city acts as both the prefecture and the subprefecture for that area.
Arrondissements are further divided into even smaller areas called communes, which are like towns or villages.

A Look Back: History of Charente's Arrondissements
The way the Charente department is divided has changed a few times over the years:
- 1790: When the Charente department was first created, it was divided into six districts: Ruffec, Confolens, La Rochefoucauld, Angoulême, Barbezieux, and Cognac. Angoulême was chosen as the main city for the department.
- 1800: The districts were changed into arrondissements. There were five of them: Angoulême, Barbezieux, Cognac, Confolens, and Ruffec. La Rochefoucauld was no longer a main district.
- 1926: The arrondissements of Barbezieux and Ruffec were removed, leaving the three we have today.
