What Does the Name Arroyito Mean?
The name Arroyito means "little stream" or "little brook" in Spanish. The city was named after a small stream that used to flow through the area and into the Xanaes river. Old records called this place paraje del Arroyito or El Arroyito.
A Look Back at Arroyito's History
When Was Arroyito First Settled?
It's not completely clear when Arroyito was first founded. The oldest document that mentions it is from a census taken on November 23, 1778. This census was for the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, and it showed that Arroyito had 220 people living there.
This small village was known as Villa Arroyito. A Spanish soldier named José Ignacio Urquía chose this spot to build a church. The church was dedicated to the Virgin of Mercy and was finished in 1790.
By 1865, the first official census in Argentina counted 228 people living in Arroyito.
How Arroyito's Economy Grew
From Forests to Factories
At first, Arroyito's main business was cutting down trees. Two Italian immigrants, Baldassare Dalle Mura and Raffaello Bianchi, owned the biggest sawmills (places where wood is cut) at that time. As the forests were cleared, people started using the land for agriculture, like farming.
However, the Great Depression in the 1930s hit the sawmill business hard. The sawmills had to close, which caused many people to leave Arroyito.
The Birth of Arcor
In the early 1950s, a group of young business people, led by Fulvio Salvador Pagani, had an idea. They wanted to start a candy factory. Their dream was to make good quality candy that everyone could afford. This dream came true on July 5, 1951, when the first candy factory opened.
This was the beginning of Arcor, a very famous company. Arcor's opening brought new life to Arroyito. Many jobs were created, and the city's population grew a lot.
