Arthur John McMahon (born February 24, 1946) is a former American professional football player. He was a defensive back who played in both the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL). McMahon was chosen by the Boston Patriots in the 1968 draft. He also played college football for North Carolina State University.
Growing Up and High School
Arthur McMahon was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Carteret, New Jersey. He went to Carteret High School, graduating in 1964. McMahon is one of only four students from Carteret High School to ever play in the NFL. The others are Stan Kosel, Jason Worilds, and Sam Kamara.
College Football Star
After high school, Art McMahon played college football at North Carolina State University. He was a very good player there. In 1966, he was named a First-team All-ACC player. This means he was one of the best players in the Atlantic Coast Conference that year.
Playing in the NFL
In 1968, Art McMahon was drafted by the Boston Patriots. He was picked in the 15th round, as the 385th player overall. He played for the Boston Patriots from 1968 to 1970. The team later changed its name to the New England Patriots. McMahon played for them again in 1972. He missed part of the 1970 season and all of the 1971 season because of an injury.
