Arthur Nicholas Whistler Colahan (born August 12, 1884 – died September 15, 1952) was an Irish medical doctor and a talented songwriter. He is best known for writing the famous song Galway Bay.

Arthur Colahan's Life

Arthur Colahan was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland. His full birth name was Nicholas Arthur Colohan. He was the oldest child of Professor Nicholas Colahan and Elisabeth Quinn. His family later moved to Galway, where he spent his childhood.

His Education

Arthur went to secondary school at St Joseph's Patrician College in Galway. He also studied at Mungret College in Limerick. In 1900, he started studying at University College Dublin. He first earned an Arts degree, then decided to study medicine. He later moved to University College Galway and finished his medical degree in 1913. While at college, he enjoyed being part of the Literary and Debating Society. He also liked to take part in drama performances.

His Medical Career

Arthur Colahan began his work as a doctor in Galway. He worked at the County Infirmary. Later, he moved to Dublin and worked at the Holles Street maternity hospital.

He then joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. During his time in the army, he faced difficult conditions in India. After his military service, he settled in Leicester, England. There, he became a specialist in brain and nerve conditions. He worked in this field for the rest of his life.

Arthur Colahan was not only a doctor but also a gifted songwriter. He wrote many popular songs.

The Song Galway Bay

His most famous song is Galway Bay. This song became incredibly popular, especially after the famous singer Bing Crosby performed it. For a time, it was one of the best-selling records ever!

There are different stories about where Arthur wrote Galway Bay. Some people say he wrote it in the home of Dr. Morris in Galway. Others believe he wrote it at The Vicars Croft, also in Galway. From this spot, you can see the beautiful Galway Bay.
