Arthur Nebe (born 13 November 1894 – died 21 March 1945) was a German officer in the SS. He held important jobs in the police and security groups of Nazi Germany. From 1941, he played a big part in the terrible events of the Holocaust.

Arthur Nebe's Early Life and Career

Arthur Nebe was born in Berlin in 1894. His father was a school teacher. When World War I started, Nebe joined the army. He served well during the war.

In 1920, he became a detective in Berlin. He joined the police force known as the Kriminalpolizei (Kripo), which means Criminal Police. He moved up in rank quickly. By 1923, he was a police inspector. In 1924, he became a police commissioner.

Rising Through the Police Ranks

Nebe continued to advance in the Prussian police force. In 1936, he became the head of the Criminal Police (Kripo) in Nazi Germany. This group later became part of a larger security office called the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) in 1939.

Before Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Nebe volunteered for a special role. He became the leader of Einsatzgruppe B. This was one of four mobile units of the SS. These units were sent into areas like modern-day Belarus. They were responsible for the deaths of many people. By November 1941, his unit reported over 45,000 victims.

In late 1941, Nebe went back to Berlin. He continued his work with the RSHA.

Involvement in the 20 July Plot

Arthur Nebe was involved in a secret plan against Adolf Hitler. This plan is known as the 20 July plot. The goal was to remove Hitler from power. Nebe was supposed to lead a team of 12 police officers. Their job was to stop a high-ranking Nazi official. However, the signal to act never reached him.

After the attempt to remove Hitler failed, Nebe ran away and hid. He was found and arrested in January 1945. On March 2, he was sentenced to death by a court called the People's Court. Official records say he was executed in Berlin at Plötzensee Prison on March 21, 1945.
