Early Life and Education
Arthur Pomeroy was born in Devon, a county in England. He received a good education, first attending Westminster School in London. After that, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, which is a very famous university.
Church Career in Ireland
Pomeroy became a Chaplain to Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex. A chaplain is a priest who serves a specific person, family, or institution. Lord Essex was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1672 to 1677. This meant he was the King's main representative in Ireland.
In 1673, Lord Essex appointed Arthur Pomeroy as the Dean of Cork. A Dean is a senior priest who leads a group of clergy in a cathedral. Pomeroy officially started this role on May 5, 1673. He served as the Dean of Cork for a long time, until he passed away in 1710.
Besides being the Dean of Cork, Pomeroy held other church roles. He was the Treasurer of Cloyne Cathedral. A treasurer manages the money for the church. He was also a Prebendary of Kilpeacon in St Mary's Cathedral, Limerick. A prebendary is a type of senior clergyman. Additionally, he was the Rector of Carrigaline. A rector is the main priest in charge of a parish.
