Early Life and Family

Arthur Ramsay was born in Torquay, Devon. He was the oldest of five sons. His father was John Ramsay, 13th Earl of Dalhousie, and his mother was Lady Ida Louisa Bennet.

Arthur had two brothers who became well-known. His brother Sir Patrick Ramsay became an important diplomat, working with other countries. Another brother, Admiral Sir Alexander Ramsay, was a senior officer in the Royal Navy. He married Princess Patricia of Connaught, who was a member of the royal family.

Arthur went to school at Eton College, a famous boarding school. He then studied at the University College, Oxford. When his father passed away in 1887, Arthur became the Earl of Dalhousie at a young age.

Military Service

Lord Dalhousie joined the military. He was first part of a local volunteer regiment called the Forfar and Kincardine Artillery. In 1900, he became a second lieutenant in the Scots Guards, a famous British Army regiment.

Soon after, the Second Boer War began in South Africa. Lord Dalhousie and his battalion were sent there in April 1900. He served in South Africa until the war ended in 1902. During this time, he was promoted to lieutenant.

Later, he also fought as a captain in the First World War. Besides his military duties, he was a Justice of the Peace for Forfarshire and a Deputy Lieutenant for the county. These roles meant he helped with local government and public duties.
