Arthur Knight Wallis (born January 4, 1868 – died November 27, 1905) was an amazing Irish athlete. He was famous for playing both cricket and rugby union at a very high level. He even represented his country, Ireland, in international rugby matches!

Who Was Arthur Knight Wallis?

Arthur Knight Wallis was born in Donnycarney, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. From a young age, he showed great talent in sports. He also had a passion for learning. He decided to study medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, a very well-known university.

A Star in Two Sports

While studying at Trinity College, Arthur didn't just focus on his books. He was also a fantastic sportsman. He played rugby for the Dublin University Football Club. His skills were so good that he was chosen to play for the Irish national rugby team. He played in five important international matches, called Test matches, during the 1892 and 1893 Home Nations Championship. This was a huge achievement!

Cricket Career

Besides rugby, Arthur was also a skilled cricketer. He played first-class cricket for the Dublin University Cricket Club. First-class cricket is the highest level of the sport below international matches. In 1895, his team went on a tour of England.

  • His first big cricket match was against Cambridge University at a ground called Fenner's.
  • He then played another match against Leicestershire at Leicester.
  • His third and final first-class match that year was back in Dublin, against Cambridge University at College Park, Dublin.

As a bowler, Arthur was good at taking wickets. He managed to get 6 wickets in his three first-class matches. His best performance in one innings was taking 3 wickets while 110 runs were scored against his team.

Life as a Doctor

After finishing his studies, Arthur Knight Wallis became a doctor. He worked in Dublin, helping people with their health. Sadly, he passed away in November 1905, when he was only 37 years old.

A Family of Athletes

Arthur wasn't the only talented athlete in his family. His brother, William Wallis, also played international rugby for Ireland. Later on, his nephew, Tommy Wallis, also followed in their footsteps and played for the Irish national rugby team. It seems sporting talent ran in the Wallis family!
