Artichoke River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Artichoke River is a cool river in northeastern Minnesota, United States. It's about 13.5-mile-long (21.7 km), which is like 21.7 kilometers. This river is a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one called the Saint Louis River. Think of it as a helper river!

The Artichoke River is part of a huge water system called the watershed of Lake Superior. This means all the water from the Artichoke River eventually makes its way to Lake Superior, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world! The river stays entirely within Saint Louis County.

What Does "Artichoke" Mean?

The name of the river comes from the Ojibwe language. In Ojibwe, it's called askibwaanikaa-ziibi. This means "river full of Jerusalem artichokes." Jerusalem artichokes are not actually artichokes, but a type of sunflower plant with edible roots. There's another river nearby, the Us-kab-wan-ka River, that has the same Ojibwe name!

Where Does the Artichoke River Flow?

The Artichoke River starts its journey from a place called Artichoke Lake, which is in New Independence Township. From there, it generally flows south.

As it travels, the river passes through a few different areas:

  • Alborn Township
  • Culver Township

Finally, the Artichoke River flows into the Saint Louis River from the north. This happens in Culver Township, right across from a small town called Brookston.
