Arto Tchakmakchian RCA (Armenian: Արտո Չաքմաքչյան) was a talented Armenian-Canadian artist. He was born on June 26, 1933, and passed away on October 1, 2019. Arto Tchakmakchian was famous for his sculptures and paintings. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 2015, he received the Armenian Order of Honor for his amazing work.

About Arto Tchakmakchian
Arto Tchakmakchian, whose full name was Harutyun, grew up in a family that loved books. His father owned a bookshop in Cairo, Egypt, where Arto was born in 1933.
Early Life and Studies
Arto went to Nubarian National College in Heliopolis. In 1946, when he was 13, his family moved to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. He started his art studies at the age of 15 at the Art School of Panos Terlemezian. This is where he began to develop his skills as an artist.
Important Works and Awards
Arto Tchakmakchian won many awards for his art.
- In 1962, he won first prize at an international art show in Prague. This was for his sculpture called Reclining Figure.
- He also won first prize for his artwork Monument to the Victims of Hiroshima. This sculpture was given by the Soviet Union to the City of Hiroshima in 1964. It was a powerful piece about peace.
- In 1969, he received a golden medal from the Armenian Youth Union. This was for his sculptures Mother and Arno Babajanyan. These works were so good that the famous State Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow bought them.
- That same year, Arto Tchakmakchian appeared in a film called The Color of Armenian Land.
Later Career and Exhibitions
Many important people supported Arto Tchakmakchian's art.
- Starting in 1964, a scientist named Artem Alikhanian was one of his biggest supporters.
- In 1972, the famous writer Joseph Brodsky visited Arto's art studio in Yerevan.
- In 1984, Arto won another first prize in Montreal, Canada. This was for a sculpture of Wilfrid Pelletier, a famous musician. You can still see this sculpture at Place des Arts in Montreal.
- His artworks have been shown in famous museums around the world. This includes the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.
- In 2010, a special exhibition of his work was held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
Awards and Recognitions
Arto Tchakmakchian received several important awards for his contributions to art:
- 2004: "Order of Movses Khorenatsi" from Armenia.
- 2009: "Letter of Recognition" from the Minister of Culture in Quebec Government, Canada.
- 2009: Medal of "Naregatsi" from the University of California in Los Angeles.
- 2015: Order of Honor from Armenia.
