Asa Howe Cory (born May 31, 1814 – died June 6, 1892) was an important person during the American Civil War. He was a captain in the Union Army, leading a group of soldiers called Company H in the 58th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Besides being a military leader, he also worked as a newspaper publisher and a postmaster.
Early Life and Career
Asa Howe Cory was born in a place called Sullivan, in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. When he was young, he went to public schools there.
He started his career in Wellsboro, also in Tioga County. For two years, he published a newspaper called "The Phoenix." Later, he moved to Smethport, Pennsylvania. There, he bought another newspaper called "The McKean County Journal." In 1837, he changed its name to "The Beacon." He published this newspaper for three years before selling it. In 1848, the people of Smethport elected him as their Road Commissioner, which meant he was in charge of local roads.
Service in the Civil War
When the American Civil War began in 1861, Asa Howe Cory played a big part. He helped create a group of soldiers known as Company H for the 58th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He became the captain of this company.
Captain Cory served with the Union Army starting on October 1, 1861. He continued to lead his soldiers until August 21, 1862. He had to leave the army because he suffered from severe frostbite, which is a serious injury caused by extreme cold.
Life After the War
After the Civil War ended, Asa Howe Cory continued to serve his community. He was chosen to be the Postmaster of Coryville, Pennsylvania. This meant he was in charge of the local post office, helping people send and receive mail.
