Ascot Racecourse is a very important place for horse racing in Perth, Western Australia. It's about 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of the city center. This famous racecourse is where the main office for Perth Racing is located.
People often call Ascot Racecourse the "grand old lady" of Australian racecourses. This nickname shows how old and respected it is. The track itself is 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) long and has modern, well-kept grass. It also has a special 300-meter (984-foot) uphill section. Experts say this part of the track is one of the toughest tests for long-distance racehorses in Australia.

Ascot Racecourse: A Look Back in Time
How Ascot's Horse Racing Began
The story of Ascot Racecourse started a long time ago, in 1848. Back then, a horse race meeting was held on a farm called "Grove Farm." This farm belonged to J.W. Hardey and was right next to the Swan River.
Soon after, people chose a spot on Hardey's land to be a permanent race track. This became known as the Perth Race Course. Later, it was renamed Ascot Racecourse. In 1852, a group called the West Australian Turf Club was officially formed to organize these races.
Key Moments in Ascot's History
A very important race, the first-ever Perth Cup, took place at Ascot in 1887. This race is still a big event today.
For a while, it was easier for people to get to the racecourse by train. A railway line was built in 1885 on the other side of the Swan River. Then, in 1897, the railway was extended right across the river to the racecourse itself. However, this railway and its station were removed in 1957.
Exciting Races at Ascot
Ascot Racecourse hosts many thrilling horse races throughout the year. Some of these are called "Group races," which means they are very important and attract top horses.
Some of the biggest races include the Kingston Town Classic, the Railway Stakes, and the Winterbottom Stakes. These races bring together some of the best horses and jockeys. There are also races for younger horses, like the Karrakatta Plate for two-year-olds, and races just for fillies (young female horses), such as the WA Oaks.
The Famous Perth Cup
One of the most exciting events on the racing calendar in Perth is the Perth Cup. This special race happens every year. It's usually held either on New Year's Day or on a Saturday close to it. The Perth Cup is a major celebration and a highlight for many horse racing fans.
