Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Asgard is a special place in Norse mythology. It is one of the Nine Realms, which are different worlds. Asgard is home to the Æsir, a group of powerful gods and goddesses. It sits high up in the branches of Yggdrasil, the giant world tree. The only way to get from Asgard to Midgard (the human world) is by crossing the beautiful rainbow bridge called Bifröst.

In the very center of Asgard is a large, green field called Iðavöllr. This is where the Æsir gods and goddesses gather. They meet here to have big feasts, celebrate, and talk about important issues. The male gods have their meetings in a grand hall known as Glaðsheimr. The goddesses meet in their own hall called Vingólf. Some old poems, like the Grímnismál, say that the famous hall Valhalla was also located in the field of Glaðsheimr.

Asgard in Popular Culture

Asgard is a very popular idea and appears in many modern stories.

In the science fiction TV series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, "Asgard" is the name of a very smart alien race. These beings are from another planet and have advanced technology.

Asgard also shows up a lot in Marvel Comics. Just like in the old myths, it is one of the Nine Realms. It is home to a group of beings called the Asgardians. Long ago, people in Germanic lands, especially the Norsemen, used to worship these Asgardians as gods. You can often see Asgard and hear it mentioned in Marvel movies and TV shows.
