Midgard is an ancient name for our world. It comes from the old Germanic languages. The word "Midgard" means "middle enclosure" or "middle yard." You might know it better as "Middle Earth," which is the English way of saying it from the Old Norse language.

Midgard in Norse Mythology

In Norse mythology, Midgard is a special place. It is the home of humans, also called mortals. Imagine it as a world in the middle of everything.

Midgard is surrounded by a huge ocean. In this ocean lives a giant sea serpent named Jörmungandr. This serpent is so big it wraps around the entire world!

Midgard is also located between two other important realms:

  • Asgard: This is the land of the gods, known as the Aesir.
  • Helheim: This is the land of the dead, ruled by the goddess Hel.

A magical rainbow bridge called the Bifrost Bridge connects Midgard to Asgard. The god Heimdall guards this bridge. He makes sure no one enters or leaves without permission.

The End of Midgard

According to Norse myths, Midgard will face a big event called Ragnarök. This is known as the "battle at the end of the world."

During Ragnarök, Jörmungandr, the sea serpent, will rise from the ocean. It will poison both the land and the sea. The final battle will happen on a large plain called Vigrond.

In this huge battle, Midgard and almost all life on it will be destroyed. The earth is said to sink into the sea. But don't worry, a new world is supposed to rise from the waters afterward!
