What Does the Name Ashippun Mean?
The name Ashippun comes from the Ojibwe people. Some say it means "decayed lungs." But there's another idea! It might come from an old Native American word for "raccoon." This is because a river, sometimes called the Raccoon River, flows through the eastern part of the town. The Menominee and Ojibway names for raccoon are very similar to Ashippun.

Ashippun covers an area of about 35.7 square miles (92.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 35.6 square miles (92.3 square kilometers). A small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.2 square kilometers), is water.
