Ashland is a small town located in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2010, about 66 people lived there.

History of Ashland

The people who lived in this new community wanted to open a post office. They suggested the name "Pearl City." However, postal officials did not agree with this name. This was because there was already a post office called Pearl in Oklahoma Territory.

At that time, officials knew that Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory would soon become one state. They did not want two post offices in the same new state to have such similar names. So, they chose the name Ashland instead. A post office officially opened in Ashland, Indian Territory, on October 1, 1902. When it was founded, Ashland was part of Tobucksy County in the Choctaw Nation.
