Ashwani Kumar, born on October 26, 1952, is an Indian politician and a lawyer. He used to be a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, representing the state of Punjab. He also served as the Minister of Law and Justice for India. Before that, he was a Minister of State in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
In 1991, when he was 37, he became one of the youngest Additional Solicitors General of India. He worked as a spokesperson for the Indian National Congress party. As a lawyer, he handled important cases in the Supreme Court of India. This included the Bhopal Gas Tragedy case. He also represented big companies in international legal disputes. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2016.
He left the Indian National Congress party on February 15, 2022.

Early Life and Education
Ashwani Kumar was born in Delhi, India, on October 26, 1952. He went to St. Stephen's College, Delhi. After that, he studied law at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. He also earned a Master of Philosophy degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
In 2004, Panjab University gave him an honorary doctorate in law. This is a special degree given to honor someone's achievements.
Political Career and Roles
Ashwani Kumar has held many important positions in the Indian government. He worked as the Additional Solicitor General of India. He is also connected with Doughty Street Chambers in London, where he works on human rights issues.
Ministerial Responsibilities
Ashwani Kumar was the Minister of Law and Justice from October 28, 2012, to May 11, 2013. Before that, he was a Minister of State in several ministries. These included the Ministry of Planning, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Earth Sciences. He also served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.
Special Envoy to Japan
In 2013, the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, chose Ashwani Kumar for a special role. He was appointed as a Special Envoy to Japan. His job was to keep strong connections between India and Japan. He also helped prepare for a visit by Japan's Emperor and Empress to India.

Academic Contributions
Ashwani Kumar has also been involved in academics and writing. In 2011, he was a main speaker at a Science and Technology Forum meeting in Kyoto, Japan. He was also a guest speaker at Harvard University in 2008. In 2004, he was a visiting scholar at CSIS in Washington.
He has written many articles about law, economic changes, elections, and international affairs. In 2003, he wrote a book called Law, Ideas and Ideology in Politics; Perspectives of an Activist.
In 2012, he gave a speech at the Harvard Club in New York City. He talked about how laws help India's economy grow. He also gave a lecture at MIT. In 2013, he spoke at a conference in Aix-en-Provence, France. He was a special fellow at Trinity College, Dublin in 2016.

Ashwani Kumar has been a member of several important committees in the Indian Parliament. In 2009, he joined the Standing Committee of Parliament on External Affairs. He also led the Select Committee of the Rajya Sabha for "The Prevention of Torture Bill" in 2010.
He was a member of the Standing Committee on Defense and the Public Accounts Committee in 2013. In 2014, he joined the Co-ordination Committee of the Indian National Congress in Rajya Sabha. He also became a member of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the INC.

In 2014, Kumar became a member of the National Literacy Mission. He was part of the Indian delegation for important talks with the US and Japan. In 2003, he founded the Indo-French Parliamentary Friendship Group.
In November 2017, he was appointed a Distinguished Fellow with the Global Federation of Competitiveness Council.
International Representation
In 2013, Ashwani Kumar was chosen to represent India at the United Nations General Assembly Session in New York City. He gave a speech there. He also represented India at the World Economic Forum's meeting in Dalian, China, in 2011.
Personal Life
Ashwani Kumar married Madhu on November 30, 1975. They had a son and a daughter together.
Honours and Awards
