Early Life and Sports Beginnings
Asier Martínez was born in a town called Zizur Mayor in Spain. Sports run in his family! His mother, Elena Echarte, was also a competitive athlete.
When Asier was younger, he first showed his talent in the high jump. He even won the Spanish Under-18 championships in this event. Later, he decided to focus his energy on hurdling, which became his main sport.
Asier Martínez's Athletics Career
Asier's career in hurdling really took off in 2020.
- In September 2020, he became the Spanish national champion in the 110-meter hurdles. This race took place in Getafe.
- The next year, in 2021, he won the Spanish indoor championship in the 60-meter hurdles.
- He then competed at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships. He finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, setting a new personal best time of 7.60 seconds.
Big Wins in 2021
On May 15, 2021, in Castellón, Asier improved his personal best in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.34 seconds. He also won the 110-meter hurdles race at the 2021 European Athletics Team Championships. Later that year, he won a gold medal at the 2021 European Athletics U23 Championships in Tallinn. This was a big achievement for him as a young athlete.
Olympic Dreams and Medals
In June 2021, Asier secured his spot for the 2020 Summer Olympics (which were delayed to 2021). He finished second in the Spanish national championships with a time of 13.31 seconds, which was fast enough to qualify. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, he made it to the final race and finished sixth overall. This was a new personal best time for him!
July 2022 was a very successful month for Asier.
- He won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA. He finished behind two American hurdlers, Grant Holloway and Trey Cunningham.
- After that, he won a gold medal at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich, Germany. This was a fantastic achievement!
Recent Competitions
Asier had to miss the 2023 season because of an injury. He made his return to major competitions at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow. He finished fourth at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome. Asier also competed in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he reached the semi-finals. In May 2025, he finished fourth in the 110m hurdles at the 2025 Doha Diamond League.
