Astor Island is a small island located in Antarctica. It is part of the South Shetland Islands, a group of islands near the Antarctic Peninsula. Astor Island lies between two other islands: Rugged Island and Livingston Island.
This island is quite small, with a surface area of about 12 hectares (which is roughly the size of 12 international rugby fields!). Like many places in Antarctica, Astor Island is not inhabited by people.
How Astor Island Got Its Name
Astor Island was officially named in 1958. The United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee gave it this name. They named it after B. Astor, who was connected to the New York Lyceum of Natural History. This organization is now known as the American Museum of Natural History, a famous museum in New York City.
