Asuncion (which means "Ascension" in Spanish) was once a special stop for stagecoaches. These were like old-time buses pulled by horses. Today, almost nothing is left of it. You can only find a few small pieces of adobe, which is a type of sun-dried mud brick. A small spring, or natural water source, flows through the area.

Asuncion is located in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. It sits along U.S. Route 101, a major highway. It's found between the towns of Templeton and Atascadero.

What Was Asuncion?

Asuncion was never a big town or a busy community. It was mainly a stop for travelers. People on stagecoaches would pause here to rest or change horses. It was a useful place for a quick break on a long journey.

A Historical Stop

Some historians believe that Juan Bautista De Anza and his group of settlers might have camped near Asuncion. This was during their long journey north many years ago. De Anza was an important explorer who helped open up new routes in California.

What Remains Today?

Sadly, the old adobe building that stood at Asuncion is gone. A past owner of the land removed the ruins. Because of this, most people today don't even know that this historic spot exists. Even though it's not a well-known place, it's still part of the history of the area. Today, the location is actually inside the city limits of Atascadero, California.
