Emeka Morris Ogbowu (born May 15, 1993), known as Asuquomo, is a talented rapper, singer, and visual artist. He was born in Nigeria and now lives in Ottawa, Canada. In 2020, he won a special award called the RBC x Ottawa Arts Council's Emerging Artist of the Year Award. Asuquomo has also performed before big international stars like Burna Boy, WizKid, and Lido Pimienta.
Early Life and Education
Asuquomo was born in Nigeria. He moved to Canada in 2012 to go to university. He studied at Algonquin College. There, he earned a certificate in professional illustration and concept art. This means he learned how to draw and create art for different projects.
Music and Art Career
Asuquomo is known for telling stories through both his music and his art. His work often shares ideas about Pan-African culture and has Afro-Fusion influences. This means his art mixes African sounds and styles with other music genres.
He has been an opening act for many famous artists. These include Wizkid, Grammy-nominated Burna Boy, and Lido Pimienta. He has also played at big music events. Some of these are Marvest CityFolk, Ottawa RBC Bluesfest, and Arboretum Festival.
In 2018, Asuquomo released his mixtape called This That Mo. A mixtape is like an album, but often released independently.
The Diobu EP
In June 2020, Asuquomo released an EP called Diobu. An EP is a music release that has more songs than a single but fewer than a full album. He started working on Diobu in 2018. This was during a special time when he was an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. This means he lived and worked there as an artist.
The Diobu EP was very popular with music critics. Pitchfork magazine said the album explored themes of family and home. It also talked about the experience of immigrants in their new city. The EP was featured on Exclaim!'s list of "Best EPs of 2020." It was also mentioned on CBC’s All in a Day and HotNewHipHop.
In September 2020, Asuquomo released a music video for his song "Don't Be Scared." American Songwriter Magazine described the video as "piercing, personal, intriguing and entrancing."
