Athina Rachel Tsangari was born in Athens, Greece. She studied philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Later, she earned two more degrees: one in performance studies from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and another in film directing from the University of Texas at Austin.

Her first experience in film was a small acting role in Richard Linklater's 1991 movie, Slacker. Since then, Athina has taken on many different jobs in the film world.

Film Director

Athina's first short film, Fit (1994), was made for her studies at NYU. It was even considered for the Annual Student Academy Awards.

Her first full-length movie, The Slow Business of Going (2000), was her final project for her film degree. This unique science fiction road movie was filmed in hotel rooms across nine cities using different types of cameras. It won "Best Film" at the New York Underground Film Festival in 2002. This film is now part of the permanent collection at MoMA, a famous art museum.

Her second feature film, Attenberg (2010), was shown at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. The lead actress, Ariane Labed, won an award for Best Actress. This film was also Greece's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards.

Athina also directed the short film The Capsule (2012). This film was praised by critics and shown at major film festivals like Locarno, Toronto, and Sundance.

In 2013, she made a short science fiction film called 24 Frames Per Century for the Venice Film Festival. She also created a fundraising film for the Benaki Museum, a museum about Greek history, which was narrated by actor Willem Dafoe.

In 2015, her third feature film, Chevalier, was released. It's a comedy about a group of men on a yacht. The film won "Best Film" at the BFI-London Film Festival in 2015. It also received awards for its actors and a special mention for directing. Like Attenberg, Chevalier was Greece's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards.

Athina's next movie project is an adaptation of the novel Harvest. It is expected to be released in 2024.

TV Director

Athina has also directed for television. She directed two episodes of the historical drama series Borgia.
