Atom Egoyan is a famous Armenian-Canadian film director. He became well-known in the 1980s as part of a group of filmmakers called the Toronto New Wave. His big break came in 1994 with the movie Exotica, which tells several connected stories set in an exotic nightclub.
His most famous film is The Sweet Hereafter (1997). It was based on a novel of the same name. For this film, Egoyan was nominated for two Academy Awards: one for Best Director and another for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Egoyan's movies often explore themes of feeling lonely or disconnected from others. His characters sometimes struggle to communicate, and technology often plays a big role in their lives. He also likes to tell stories in a non-linear way. This means the events in the movie are not shown in the order they happened. This technique can create suspense and make the audience think. Many of his films are also inspired by his Armenian heritage.
Egoyan has won many awards for his work, including eight Genie Awards (now called the Canadian Screen Awards). He is also a member of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors.
He is married to the actress Arsinée Khanjian, who has appeared in many of his films.

Early Life and Schooling
Egoyan was born Atom Yeghoyan on July 19, 1960, in Cairo, Egypt. His parents, Shushan and Joseph Yeghoyan, were Armenian-Egyptian painters. He was named Atom because Egypt had just completed its first nuclear reactor. He has a younger sister named Eve.
In 1963, his family moved to Victoria, Canada, and changed their last name to Egoyan.
As a teenager, Egoyan loved to read and write plays. He was inspired by writers like Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter. He said that seeing the movie Persona by director Ingmar Bergman at age 14 made him want to become a filmmaker.
It gave me an incredible respect for the medium and its possibilities... I felt that it was able to open a door that wasn't there before.
Egoyan later studied at Trinity College at the University of Toronto. There, he learned more about his Armenian culture and history.
