Attaces facts for kids
Addac (also known as Attaces) was a king of the western Alans, an ancient group of people, who lived in Hispania. Hispania is what we now call the Iberian Peninsula, which includes modern-day Spain and Portugal. Addac became king after Respendial.
In the year 409, the Alans settled in parts of Hispania, specifically in areas known as Lusitania and Carthaginiensis. These were provinces of the Roman Empire at the time.
Addac's people, the Alans, along with other groups like the Vandals and Suevi, had invaded the Western Roman Empire starting in 406. This was a time when the Roman Empire was facing many challenges.
The Battle and Addac's Death
In 418, King Addac faced a major battle. He was defeated and killed by Wallia, the king of the Visigoths. Wallia was fighting on behalf of the Roman Emperor Honorius. The battle took place in an area called "Tartessian" lands, which was likely near Gibraltar.
After Addac's death, the remaining Alans in Hispania needed a new leader. They asked Gunderic, the king of the Vandals, to also become their king. Because of this, later Vandal kings in North Africa used the title rex Wandalorum et Alanorum, which means "King of the Vandals and Alans." This showed that they ruled over both groups of people.
