Attica's History

Attica has an interesting past that dates back to the mid-1800s.

How Attica Started

In 1851, a man named William Williams came from New York and built a sawmill in this area. Most of the early settlement grew up around his land. Another person important to Attica's beginnings was I. N. Jenness. He was also a lumberman from New York and is considered a co-founder of the community.

The Post Office Changes Names

The first post office in the area opened on October 9, 1867. It was originally called "Mill Station." Oscar A. Williams was the first postmaster. Later, on September 12, 1870, the post office name was changed to "Elk Lake." Finally, on February 1, 1871, it was renamed "Attica," taking the same name as the township it was in.

The Historic Attica Hotel

The Attica Hotel was built in the early 1870s. It was first known as the Williams House and later as the Schirmer House. The Williams family, who owned it, had 14 children! The hotel had five bedrooms on its second floor wing. There was also a ballroom on the second floor with a door leading to a porch. At one point, the hotel had a total of nine doors and four porches. It even housed the local post office for a time. In November 1981, the hotel building was moved to Crossroads Village, a historical park. Its outside was restored in 1986.
