Atul Kochhar is a famous chef from India who now lives in Britain. He is also known for appearing on television. Chef Kochhar was one of the first two Indian chefs to earn a special award called a Michelin star. He received this award in London in 2001 while working at a restaurant called Tamarind. Later, he opened his own restaurant, Benares, which earned him a second Michelin star in 2007.
Since then, he has opened several other restaurants. These include Kanishka in London, Masalchi in Wembley Park, and Sindhu, Vaasu, Riwaz, and Hawkyns in Buckinghamshire. He also has a restaurant called Indian Essence in Petts Wood, Kent.
Chef Kochhar often appears on TV shows. He has also written many cookbooks. Some of his books are Curry Everyday, Simple Indian, Fish, Indian Style, Curries of the World, and 30 Minute Curries.
Early Life and Training
Atul Kochhar was born in Jamshedpur, India. He started his cooking career in 1989 at The Oberoi Group of hotels in India. He studied Hotel Management and earned his diploma from The Institute of Hotel Management Chennai.
In June 1993, Chef Kochhar began working at the five-star Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi. He worked as a sous chef there. He was in charge of 18 staff members in one of the hotel's five restaurants. He quickly helped improve the cooking standards in the kitchen. In January 1994, he moved to work at a restaurant owned by chef Bernard Kunig. By January 2001, when he was 31 years old, Chef Kochhar became the first Indian chef to receive a Michelin star.
His Restaurants
Chef Kochhar has opened many successful restaurants. After leaving Benares restaurant in London in 2018, he also ended his work with the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai.
In March 2019, Chef Kochhar opened a new restaurant called Kanishka. This restaurant is located on Maddox Street in London.
TV Appearances and Cookbooks
Chef Kochhar has been featured on many television shows. He appeared on BBC2's show called Million Pound Menu. He also hosted a series called Curry on with Atul Kochhar on the B4U network. Another series he presented was about Malaysia and was called Kochhar's Spice Kitchen.
He appeared in the second season of Masterchef Goes Large. Chef Kochhar also participated in BBC2's Great British Menu. On that show, he tried to create a special menu to celebrate the 80th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. You might have also seen him on the shows Market Kitchen and Saturday Kitchen.
