Atwood is a city in Rawlins County, Kansas, United States. It is also the county seat, which means it's the main town where the county government is located. In 2020, about 1,290 people lived in Atwood.
History
Atwood was founded in 1875 by T.A. Andrews and J.M. Matheny. They started the town about two miles east of where it is today. The city was originally named Attwood (with two "t"s). It was named after Attwood Matheny, who was 14 years old at the time. He traveled with his father when they started the town.
In 1882, the U.S. Post Office asked to change the spelling. They wanted to drop one "t," so the name became Atwood. In 1881, Atwood became the official county seat of Rawlins County.
Geography
Atwood is located in Kansas. The city covers a total area of about 1.10 square miles (2.85 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 1.04 square miles (2.69 square kilometers). A small part, about 0.06 square miles (0.16 square kilometers), is water.
