Atzara (Sardinian: Atzàra) is a small town, also called a comune, in the Province of Nuoro in Sardinia, Italy. It is located about 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of Cagliari. It is also about 45 kilometers (28 miles) southwest of Nuoro. Atzara is known as one of "The most beautiful villages of Italy."

Atzara shares its borders with several other towns. These include Belvì, Meana Sardo, Samugheo, and Sorgono.

Exploring Atzara's Past

Atzara is found in an area called Barbagia in Sardinia. The first village was built around the year 1000. It grew near a spring called Bingia de giosso, which still exists today.

The old part of town is divided into several ancient areas. These include Su Fruscu, Lodine, Montiga e Josso, Montiga e Susu, Sa Cora Manna, Su Cuccuru de Santu Giorgi, and Tzùri. Atzara was once part of the Giudicato of Arborea. This was a special kind of independent state in Sardinia long ago.
