Audeca or Andeca (Latin: Audacer) was the very last Suevic King of Galicia. This kingdom was located in what is now parts of Spain and Portugal. He ruled for a short time, from 584 until 585.
How Audeca Became King
Audeca took the throne from the young king Eboric. He did this by marrying Eboric's mother, Siseguntia. She was the widow of the previous king, Miro. By marrying her, Audeca made himself king. After taking power, Audeca sent Eboric to live in a monastery. This meant Eboric could no longer be king.
The End of the Suevic Kingdom
Audeca's actions gave the powerful Visigothic king, Leovigild, a reason to attack. Leovigild invaded the Suevic kingdom in 585. A writer named John of Biclar described what happened. He said Leovigild took over Galicia. He removed King Audeca from power. Leovigild then took control of the Suevi people, their treasures, and their land. Galicia became a part of the Visigothic kingdom.
John of Biclar also wrote that Leovigild made Audeca a priest. This meant Audeca could no longer be a king. Audeca was then sent to live in the city of Beja. Another writer, Isidore of Seville, said that Audeca's removal meant the end of the Suevic kingdom. This kingdom had lasted for 177 years.
After Audeca
After Audeca, the Suevic kingdom no longer existed. However, one person named Malaric tried to become king. He briefly led a fight against the Visigoths. But his efforts did not succeed.
Audeca's Coin
Historians have found a coin that likely belonged to Audeca. It has the words "ODIACCA REIGES" on it, which probably means "King Odiacca." This coin was unique. The only known coin of this type was kept in Madrid but was lost in 1936. The only other Suevic king whose coins with his name have survived is Rechiar.
