Audrey Brodie Collins was born on June 12, 1945. She is an American lawyer and a judge. Since 2014, she has been a justice on the California Court of Appeal. Before that, she was a federal judge in California from 1994 to 2014.

Audrey Collins's Education and Early Career
Audrey Collins was born in Chester, Pennsylvania. She went to college and earned several degrees. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard University in 1967. Later, she earned a Master of Arts from American University in 1969. In 1977, she received her law degree (Juris Doctor) from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law.
Teaching Experience
Before becoming a lawyer, Audrey Collins was a teacher. From January to June 1969, she taught at Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. She also worked as a substitute teacher in Indiana and California. From 1970 to 1971, she was an Assistant Director for a project in Denver, Colorado. She also directed the Norman Topping Student Aid Fund from 1972 to 1974.
Law Career Before Becoming a Judge
After finishing law school, Audrey Collins began her legal career. In 1977, she worked as an Assistant Attorney for the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. From 1978 to 1994, she was a deputy district attorney in the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. This means she worked for the government to bring legal cases against people accused of crimes. She held important roles there, including Assistant District Attorney from 1992 to 1994.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On January 27, 1994, President Bill Clinton chose Audrey Collins to be a judge. She was nominated for a seat on the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The United States Senate approved her nomination on May 6, 1994. She officially became a judge on May 9, 1994.
She served as the Chief Judge of this court from 2009 to 2012. This is a leadership role among the judges. On August 1, 2014, she left her position as a federal judge. She then became a justice on the California Court of Appeal.
Awards and Recognition
Audrey Collins has received special honors for her work. In 2013, she was given the Judge of the Year Award. This award came from the Loyola Law School Fidler Institute. She also received the Meritorious Women Awardee from the Los Angeles NAACP Youth Council in the same year.
