August Wilhelm Hupel (born February 25, 1737, in Buttelstedt, near Weimar – died February 7, 1819, in Paide) was a very important person. He was a Baltic German publicist, an estophile, and a linguist.

A publicist is someone who writes and publishes articles or books. An estophile is a person who loves and supports Estonian culture and language. A linguist is someone who studies languages. Hupel helped a lot with the Estonian language.

Helping the Estonian Language

August Wilhelm Hupel worked on the very first Estonian language magazine. From 1766 to 1767, he helped translate for Lühhike öppetus. This magazine was edited by Peter Ernst Wilde. It was a big step for the Estonian language.

A Doctor's Book

In 1771, Hupel published a special medical book. Its name was Arsti ramat nende juhhatamisseks kes tahtvad többed ärra-arvada ning parrandada. In Estonian, this means Manual of medical diagnostics and healthcare. It was like a guide for doctors. It helped them understand and treat sicknesses.

The Big Dictionary Project

Hupel also created a huge book about the Estonian language. In 1780, he finished his grammar book. It was called Ehstnische Sprachlehre für beide Hauptdialekte, den revalschen und den dörptschen, nebst einem vollständigen Wörterbuch.

This book included a full dictionary. The first version of the dictionary had about 17,000 words. It also explained how words change their forms. A second version came out in 1820. This one was even bigger, with about 20,000 words. This dictionary was a very important tool for learning and understanding Estonian.
