Augustan Society facts for kids

The Augustan Society, Inc. is a group based in Orlando, Florida. It was started in 1957. The main goal of the Society is to save and share information about interesting topics. These topics include heraldry (the study of coats of arms), genealogy (family history), nobility (people with special titles), and orders of chivalry (groups like knights). They also want to encourage the good ideas of chivalry in society today. The Society moved to its current home in Florida in 2007, after being in California for a long time. They publish a journal called The Augustan Omnibus twice a year.

What Does the Augustan Society Do?
The Augustan Society has one of the biggest libraries in North America for these topics. It has about 20,000 books! This huge collection helps people do research on nobility, chivalry, family history, and coats of arms. Besides helping with research and promoting chivalry, the Society also has special groups for its members.
Promoting Chivalry and Honor
Two of these groups were created to help spread the main ideas of the Society.
- The Order of the Augustan Eagle: This group acts like a special court of honor for the Society. It also helps decide what special benefits members can have.
- The Noble Company of the Rose: This group works to keep the true ideas of chivalry alive. Members try to live by a special Code of Chivalry. They also help others through charity work, both on their own and together.
Exploring Family History and Connections
Other groups within the Society are called lineage societies. These groups help members connect with others who share similar family backgrounds or interests.
- The Society of Descendants of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem: This group is for people whose ancestors lived in the Holy Land during the time of the Crusades. It's also for those who belong to a chivalry order that fought there, or who have visited the Holy Land themselves.
- The Society of Descendants of Ireland: This group brings together people of Irish heritage. They work to remember and honor their Irish ancestors. They also celebrate the beautiful country of Ireland.
- The Society of Descendants of Scotland: This group is for people who can show a clear family line from a Scottish family that lived in Scotland for at least three generations. It's also for those who descend from a Scottish king.
- The Society of Descendants of the Conquest: This group has two parts. One part is for those who can show a clear family line from William the Conqueror and his wife Matilda of Flanders. The other part is for those who can show a clear family line from one of 39 special companions. These companions are known to have fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings.
Society Gatherings and Events
The Society also holds meetings every year. These gatherings bring members together. They also help encourage more research in the special areas the Society focuses on.
