Augusto Farfus's Early Racing Days
Augusto Farfus was born in Curitiba, Brazil. He started racing very young, first trying out minibike races. In 1991, he won local championships in minibike racing.
Like many famous drivers, Augusto began his motorsport journey with karting. In 1992, at just 9 years old, he won the state championship in Paraná. From 1993 to 1998, he mostly competed in the São Paulo state championship. In 1999, he had a great year, winning the Italian Winter Cup and finishing second in the North American Championship.
Racing in Formula Cars
In 2000, Augusto Farfus moved to Italy to continue his racing career. For the next two years, he raced in the Formula Renault Italian championship and the Eurocup series. He achieved a big win in 2001, becoming the champion of the Eurocup.
In 2002, he joined the Draco Racing team to compete in Euro Formula 3000. This was a big step up in formula racing. The very next year, in 2003, he won the Euro Formula 3000 Championship when he was only 20 years old.
Touring Car Racing Career
Racing for Alfa Romeo
From 2004 to 2006, Augusto Farfus was an official driver for Alfa Romeo (with the N.Technology team). He competed in the European Touring Car Championship and later in the World Touring Car Championship.
In the 2006 season, Farfus was very close to winning the championship title. He battled against other top drivers like Andy Priaulx and Jörg Müller right up to the final race in Macau. However, some tough races and having to retire from too many events meant he finished the season in 3rd place overall.
Racing for BMW
Before the 2007 season, Augusto switched to the Schnitzer BMW team, known as BMW Team Germany. His teammate was Jörg Müller. Augusto even led the championship for a while that season but ended up in 4th place. He continued racing with BMW through 2008 and into 2009.
In 2009, he had an amazing year, winning six races! He just missed out on the championship title to SEAT's Gabriele Tarquini at the very last race. In 2010, BMW decided to have fewer cars in the WTCC. Augusto joined Andy Priaulx at the Racing Bart Mampaey team. He didn't get any official wins that year, even though he finished first in one race in Japan. He and his teammate were disqualified because their car had a part that wasn't allowed.
On December 5, 2010, BMW announced they would stop racing in the WTCC as a factory team. However, they would still provide their 320TC cars to other customer teams. On January 25, 2011, it was announced that Augusto Farfus would race for BMW in the 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. This series also included his former WTCC teammates like Andy Priaulx and Jörg Müller.
Racing for Hyundai
On December 3, 2018, it was announced that Augusto Farfus would join Hyundai for the 2019 World Touring Car Cup season. He would be teammates with Gabriele Tarquini, who was the champion of the series the year before, along with Norbert Michelisz and Nicky Catsburg.
