Augusto's Early Racing Days
Augusto Farfus was born in Curitiba, Brazil. He started racing at a very young age. In 1991, he competed in minibike races and won local championships. This was just the beginning of his exciting career.
Starting with Karting
Like many famous race car drivers, Augusto began his journey in karting. In 1992, when he was only nine years old, he won the Paraná state championship in the cadet class. From 1993 to 1998, he mostly raced in the São Paulo state championship. In 1999, he had a great year, winning the Italian Winter Cup and finishing second in the North American Championship. Augusto is married to Elirane Johnsson.
Racing in Formula Cars
In 2000, Augusto moved to Italy to continue his racing career. For the next two years, he competed in the Formula Renault Italian championship and the Eurocup series. He showed great talent, winning the Eurocup in 2001.
Becoming a Champion
In 2002, Augusto joined a team called Draco Racing in Euro Formula 3000. He quickly proved himself. In 2003, at just 20 years old, he won the Euro Formula 3000 Championship. This was a big achievement for such a young driver.
Racing Touring Cars
Driving for Alfa Romeo
From 2004 to 2006, Augusto Farfus was an official driver for Alfa Romeo (N.Technology). He raced for them in the European Touring Car Championship and later in the World Touring Car Championship.
In the 2006 season, Augusto was very close to winning the championship. He competed against top drivers like Andy Priaulx and Jörg Müller. However, some tough races and a few times he had to stop racing early meant he finished the season in 3rd place.
Joining BMW's Team
Before the 2007 season, Augusto switched to the Schnitzer BMW team, known as BMW Team Germany. He raced alongside Jörg Müller. Augusto even led the championship for a while that season. He finished the season in 4th place. He continued racing with BMW through 2008 and into 2009. In 2009, he won six races. He almost won the championship but finished behind SEAT's Gabriele Tarquini.
In 2010, BMW had fewer cars in the WTCC. Augusto joined Andy Priaulx at the Racing Bart Mampaey team. He didn't win any races that year. He did win one race in Japan, but he and his teammate were later disqualified. This was because their car had a part that wasn't allowed by the rules. In December 2010, BMW announced they would stop racing in the WTCC. However, they continued to provide cars to other teams.
On January 25, 2011, it was announced that Augusto would race for BMW in the 2011 Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. This series also included other former WTCC drivers like Andy Priaulx, Jörg Müller, and Dirk Muller.
Racing for Hyundai
On December 3, 2018, it was announced that Augusto Farfus would join Hyundai for the 2019 World Touring Car Cup season. He teamed up with the series' first champion, Gabriele Tarquini, as well as Norbert Michelisz and Nicky Catsburg.
